Gambia

Pastor Ronald Daye serves as the Concern Mission International Coordinator in The Gambia. Since 2014, Concern Mission International (CMI) has been supporting the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Banjul, The Gambia, while also providing daily hot meals to more than 200 hungry and needy children.

There remains a pressing need for greater support in this small nation—the smallest on mainland Africa.

The Gambia is a narrow country that stretches along the Gambia River, cutting through the interior of Senegal in West Africa. The river flows into the Atlantic Ocean and was historically used by slave traders as a major transportation route.

Many communities are located along the Gambia River. The capital city, Banjul, sits on Saint Mary’s Island at the mouth of the river, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

Tourism, once a major driver of the economy, suffered greatly during the coronavirus pandemic. Before that, The Gambia had been one of West Africa’s most popular tourist destinations. Remittances from abroad play a vital role in the nation’s economy, accounting for about one-fifth of its GDP, as high unemployment continues to push skilled workers to seek opportunities in developed countries.

The Gambia has a young and diverse population, with nearly 60 percent under the age of 25. While about 90 percent of Gambians are Muslim, the annual evangelical growth rate is a remarkable 8.9 percent, compared to the global rate of 2.6 percent.

The Mandinka are the largest ethnic group, followed by the Fulani herdsmen and the Wolof. Living along the Gambia River, the Mandinka are traditionally farmers, merchants, and Muslim clergy.

As of Today, Children in the Gambia still face a high prevalence of violence, including corporal punishment, high rates of child marriage, female genital mutilation, and physical and sexual abuse, particularly against girls in schools, communities, and the tourism sector. Your monthly support will help our local pastors and missionaries in Gambia feed the poor and suffering children and reach their communities with the gospel of Jesus Christ

The quickest and most effective way to help us identify with these less fortunate children in The Gambia is to make a charitable donation to Concern Mission International today.  Every dollar will reach Gambian children directly. Our Pastors and missionaries are working very hard to make sure that these poor and hungry children are well taken care of physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. You may also send donations in kind such as canned goods, non-perishable food, clothes, and shoes for the children that will be shipped to Gambia through our local shipping company.
